Something interesting happened today. I was working on a project for a client and the requirement was a file upload and downloadable system (with login of course ).. I had completed most of the stuff like login, uploading docs and the right click “save as” worked like a charm. BUT with the latest browsers like chrome and IE9\10, on clicking the link to the document, the files were getting opened either using Google Document Viewer or inside the browser itself – which was a no no for my client..
After trying to pick my brain for couple of hours I figured it could be a server thing and all I had to do was to make sure that I pass the correct header for the respective files (could be .zip, .doc or .pdf or . anything else).
Then it flashed!
I figured it out… The problem was a server problem. Since I was using the WordPress framework to build the site, the header was automatically passed for content and hence the files would open-up inside the browsers. I had to add a small code – just 4 lines in order to make this happen. Here’s what I wrote in order to force the data download:
Header set Content-Disposition attachment
And that was it! All those hours of brain picking finally paid off
I added the above code to the .htaccess file and the rest was taken care by my server Let me explain the above code:
FilesMatch: Simply tells the apache server for the document types. Here I only need to make .doc, .pdf, .zip etc as downloadable.
ForceType application/octet-stream: This told apache that the file types listed above is a generic content (MIME) type. So the browser should try to will always show the “open with” or “save as” download dialog if a server sends a file with such a MIME type.
Header set Content-Disposition attachment: Then I set the header of the webpage manually and woah! We’re done and that’s it!
For anyone having similar trouble.. Hope this helps!

Skype calls\texts from within the Fring application is no longer possible. Both VoIP services are now publicly challenging the conflict.
Fring (one of my all time favourite application on the phone), a tool that has different chat services like ICQ, Gtalk, Yahoo Messenger and Skype bundled together. Skype was accused of “fear of open mobile communication” and after this Skype has taken legal action against Fring.
Skype blocks the application since last Friday, Since, Fring upgraded its VoIP application for iPhone 4 for making free Skype Video calls. The reason given was server problems caused by Fring and hence only supported voice calls.
Avi Shechter, the Co-Founder and CEO of Fring, describes the action of Skype as an “ambush” in a blog post.
Skype responds to the issue via another blog post by saying that Fring abused its software as “growing its brand and its reputation with damaging consumers’ and also, mentioned that it would not support Fring using Skype as one of the add-on in its mobile applications anymore.
I’m a happy Fring user and today I received an official email from Fring about the “Fring VS Skype” issue. Here is a copy:
If you too used to use Skype via Fring, you can probably head over to http://m.skype.com/ on your mobile phone and download a simple independent skype application to text and make calls!
One of the questions that I had been asking is ‘why Google does not have a cloud-based program to edit and modify videos on YouTube’. And now, YouTube Now (finally) has a new simple, video editor online.
With the editor you can easily create new videos with pieces from your videos you’ve uploaded on the youtube channels. You drag the desired video programs in the timeline and for each video separately, you can edit certain parts of the video and cut\copy and edit instantly!
As for the audio, you can choose from a number of standard songs of famous and lesser known artists.
Here is a video, on how to edit videos on the cloud:

uTorrent has just published its official public release of “web torrents”, named Falcon uTorrent. After months of tests to users by invitation. This draft uTorrent allows users to access their content via streaming and manage torrents from anywhere through a simple web interface.
Falcon is part of the uTorrent Labs, and now it is open to anyone who wants to try them, the development team expects to get enough feedback from users to improve even more.
This now allows us to access our downloads from anywhere through a web interface (which claims to be safe), and to be able to view streaming videos so that we can start watching before the download is complete.
Later hope to add features that help to find torrents, although it is not clear how they will. The only clue is that they do not want to do both as an integrated search engine that slows the program, but who bet on the APIs.
If you want to test the Falcon project, you need to go to the official site and sign up . They also mention that, the are working on improved torrent search for better search optimization. Go Torrents!
