Tweet Less Blog More

I see lot of bloggers getting addicted to Twitter. Most of the famous bloggers are on twitter and all they do nowadays is to just keep sharing links on Twitter and searching for new inspirational content!

I’m sure twitter is going overcapacity with all the information, but really bloggers? Common, we’re all awesome at blogging about new stuff and I think we need to stick to the basics instead of just tweeting all the time :D

Here is a nice illustration of Google blogger saying “Tweet Less & Blog More”!

Observations are having a good relationship with your readers is amazing. Having good content is amazing.

> For humans, content is  boring than good content.

> For Google, the relationship with your readers is all that matters (your popularity -> links).

So I think, that’s the reason why XKCD is popular today :

- The key to a successful blog is to create a relationship with your readers.

Alexa or Not?

alexa logo

That’s the question every new blogger thinks about. If you ask me why Alexa Rankings? its simply because of the Money and Search Engine listings.

* Advertisers who want to advertise on your site look at Alexa ranking before bidding for the CPC rate Ads. Lower the ranking, more advertisers would flock to advertise on your site.

* Thinking about search engine listing, if your blog has a <200k ranking on Alexa, then there are chances of the articles\posts showing on the 3-4th pages of search engines. However, if your blog ranks <50k on Alexa the chances of content getting shared on search engines would have a +90% chance in the search listing :)

graphs

Alexa Rank is a ranking or position analysis system made to know the number or visitors on the blog. Sites are Ranked \ positioned depending on the number of visits the site receives.

There’s 2 types of Alexa ranks:
- Global Ranking
- Country Ranking

Alexa Rank varies with Google Page Rank. Smaller the Alexa Rank of a blog, the better. Concentrate on getting a Good Alexa ranking for better Money and Search engine listing. So the final answer is, YES!

I’ve written a detailed post on Alexa tips and tricks on Techmypassion.com a 100% Revenue sharing blog!

Huge List of Ping \ Update service URLs for WordPress

Ping or Update Services are tools that you can use to let other people know you’ve updated your blog (or in simple words, its just notifying sites, and letting them know that you have new content on your Website).

WordPress automatically notifies popular Update Services that you’ve updated your blog by sending a XML-RPC ping each time you create or update a post. In turn, Update Services process the ping and updates their proprietary indices with your update. Now people browsing sites like Technorati or Sphere can find your most recent posts easily!

So I’ve put together a list of popular ping shot URL’s that we can add to our WordPress for better crawling of the content.

Here is the list, feel free to add them to your wordpress.

Two ways to Auto-update your Blog’s footer this New Year!

Did you update your Blog’s footer copyright notice with the new year? Here is 2 simple ways to let your footer auto-update itself with the new year :) .

If you’re running WordPress like me, then all you need to:

* Open the footer.php in your theme folder
* Paste “<?php echo date(“Y”); ?>” instead of the copyright year
* Save the file

And if you like JavaScript more than PHP then you could prefer and use the JavaScript version of the script.

Here is the script:

<script language=”JavaScript”>
<!–
document.write(‘&copy;’ );
document.write(new Date().getFullYear());
document.write(‘ YourSiteName.com – All Rights Reserved.’);
//–>
</script>

Indeed a simple thing helps save lot of time… BUT make sure the date on the server is correct otherwise it’s going to be wonky :)

WordPress 2.9 is available, what's new?

After the release of WordPress 2.8.6, WordPress engineers started working on a newer version of WordPress and they had made up their mind that they would launch a newer version of WordPress within this year (2009)…. And they kept their words by launching it yesterday!! Congrats to the WordPress team :) .

Let me discuss some import and new features in WordPress 2.9:

  • Trash em’, instead of Delete: Now there is an option to trash your recent drafts and comments. If you trash a draft\comment by mistake you can now undo the”trash” feature. This also gets rid of the annoying JS popup – “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.
  • Built-in image editor: Allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and resize\scale your images. This is one of the much hyped features in this release of WordPress 2.9.
  • Nice buttons: In the dashboard the WordPress buttons have been smoothened and looks nice :) as of now, in the WordPress 2.9 release there aren’t any high end UI changes to the admin dashboard. This release mainly concentrates on some under the hood changes to the WordPress.
  • Under the hood changes:

-          Previously if we wanted to add a ‘rel=canonical’ to the WordPress blog, we had to use a plugin like All In One SEO, but now it’s been hard coded into the WordPress template for better SEO..

-          Automatic database optimization support is also one of the new main features. Remember that error “An error occurred, please try again” in WordPress? Yeah, that one. I hope we won’t be getting any of those since WordPress can automatically fix errors itself now.

Here is a video guide from WordPress team on the new WordPress 2.9 Carmen:

The upgrades in 2.9 have been an exotic cycle, let’s wait and see what’s new in WordPress 3.0, which is coming soon (this spring). We can expect a lot more since the merge of MU with the WordPress core, and we hear that there is going to be a new default theme. Cheers to the WordPress team :)

Do you need the WHOIS protection?

domin whois

One of my friend who got inspired by my tips started blogging recently. Although, he wasn’t a geek like me and didn’t know more about web hosting\costs\privacy and stuff. His other friend helped him setting up a website for a cheap cost with minimum bandwidth\space and he finally kick started his blog. When I checked the whois information for his domain, I could get all his personal information such as his email address, phone number and his current address. I immediately notified him about this serious privacy hazard and then he chose the hide his ‘who is’ information.

If you are not familiar with the term, ‘whois privacy’, it’s a service offered by most domain name registrars that protects your information as a domain registrant from people performing a “whois” on your domains.

To view the whois information of a particular website, just hit http://whois.domaintools.com/[websiteURL].

Ex. http://whois.domaintools.com/thesharath.com would give you the ‘whois’ of mypassion and since I have chosen the hide my who is info and if you want to find out more, you would have to contact PrivacyProtect.org and they in-turn will email me.

Until some years ago many people would recommend you to use a whois privacy service. It would protect your contact information, after all, and given the privacy issues on the web this could only be a good thing. I still believe this is valid, although the World Wide Web has evolved so much from the past years.

This is really handy to safely shop online, and one of the points used to verify the credibility of an online store was to check the whois information for the domain.

If you are creating a website as a hobby and prefer to keep your contact information private, then using a whois privacy service is fine.

Finally, if your reasoning for using the privacy protection is the fear of getting spam on that email address buckle up people, make sure you have added whois privacy to your domain to protect yourself from spammers.

What are you opinions on WHOIS privacy? Post your comments below!
